Greetings to you in the New Year!
It’s Kara from Sarathan, sharing our musical news. It’s time for my big moment, wherein I surreptitiously advocate my system of values while reviewing Feral Children’s new album, Brand New Blood (released January 19, 2010!).
Here we go:
Music is important, of course, but so far as I’m concerned, a band is only as good as its lyrics. I’m hopelessly haunted by the imagined cries of all the poor, lost songs who will never achieve their full glory … all for their master’s lack of poetic graces. Call me a snoot, but in my mind, there is no greater musical crime than sullying creative harmonic movements with unoriginal language.
So what’s the word on Feral Children’s new album, Brand New Blood? According to See What You Hear blog, this music will grab you:
“Th
eir second album, Brand New Blood, is warm and well-produced (thank you, Scott Colburn); their harmonies can pull you in without trying too hard (not an easy thing to do these days); the subject matter is often alluringly dark, while the songs themselves shift subtly, growing and flickering in a way that rewards patience.”
This sounds good. Intriguing, even. But what of the lyrics? Well, I’m just going to say that where some songs weep, these songs … well, they sing.

One of my favorite lyrical passages by Feral Children:
It’s quiet like the night swimming dripped down a water slide under the pink moon light
where the apple, the apple of my eye is turning brown inside and falling far from the falling tree…
~ “Conveyor”
In the words of Feral Children, “Oh Lordy…”
It makes my soul happy.
